Despite management’s attempts to block us, we’ve just completed our third successful night collecting signatures and informing tenant’s of their rights! So far we have 66 names and 1/3 of the units in the building on-board! We may have some more exciting news in the next few days as well.. stay tuned.
In our first night of tabling in the lobby we’ve already collected 30+ signatures for one of our DHCR forms! Tonight (Tuesday March 13th) Assemblyman Lopez’s legislative assistant will be joining us in the building if you have any questions you’d like to ask him. Don’t forget to bring a copy of your lease (we can make a copy for you as well) and all of your billing history if you’ve bought your own internet service with Clear or Optimum.
We are so excited by the enthusiasm of the CB community to take positive, proactive steps forward. If you are worried about management retaliation, please know we all have the right to organize and meet in the lobby. New York Real Property Law Section 230.
1. No landlord shall interfere with the right of a tenant to form, join or participate in the lawful activities of any group, committee or other organization formed to protect the rights of tenants; nor shall any landlord harass, punish, penalize, diminish, or withhold any right, benefit or privilege of a tenant under his tenancy for exercising such right. 2. Tenants' groups, committees or other tenants' organizations shall have the right to meet without being required to pay a fee in any location on the premises including a community or social room where use is normally subject to a fee which is devoted to the common use of all tenants in a peaceful manner, at reasonable hours and without obstructing access to the premises or facilities. No landlord shall deny such right.

After several months of planning, and with Assemblyman Vito Lopez on our side, we are ready to begin filing complaints with the DHCR! We’ll be in the lobby Monday March 12th through Sunday March 18th (6PM-8PM on weekdays and 12PM-4PM on the weekend) to help you with this process. Please bring a copy of your current lease!
